Fish was waiting for me when I returned to the office.

“Ludington is on the phone with MacDonald right now,” he said in a low voice. “He’s furious.”

“I’m sure.” I smiled at the memory of the conference. “It was delightful.”

“Tell me exactly what you did, because I want to see what Duncan has in his story when he files it.”

“You think he’ll leave out the salacious stuff,” I said.

Fish hesitated and then nodded. “There’s a rumor that he wants to get hired in a public relations capacity for the county commission. There’s a job opening up this month, and I’ve heard that he put in an application.”

I smirked at the thought. “I’d have a lot of fun if he were the county board’s official spokesman.”

Fish made a face. “Right now, I just want to make sure that our story tomorrow isn’t lacking compared to what everybody else is going to run.”

I filled him in. When I got to the part about stealing property and lawsuits, he grinned.

“You never disappoint.” He realized he was smiling too late to hide it but sobered immediately. “Don’t poke Duncan again today. Just write your story—don’t touch on the conference—and I’ll handle Duncan.”

That sounded like zero fun, but I had plans for the evening—another opportunity to torture Tad—so I nodded. “I’ll be quick. Eliot and I are having dinner downtown. It’s date night.”

Fish made a face. “You have date nights? What do you do?”

“Eliot prefers when I’m … um … stimulated before going home.”

Fish’s eyes narrowed. “Stop. I don’t want to know.”

“Probably not.”

“Just stay away from Duncan. The last thing we need is you being reported to Human Resources twice in one day. The apple theft is turning into a thing.”

“Just because I had an apple doesn’t mean I stole his apple.”

“Write your story and get out of here. I’ve had my fill of drama for one day.”
